A windy and warmer day kicks off Friday in Chicago, but a severe storm threat is expected to develop after dark, bringing with it the possibility for damaging winds.  CBS Chicago meteorologist Laura Bannon says the risk of severe thunderstorms increases late Friday night.

Following storms sweeping through overnight Friday into early Saturday morning, temperatures are expected to still be mild.

Severe winds and storms overnight left a trail of damage across the Chicago area and in parts of Illinois. The far west suburbs followed tornado warnings in Dupage, Kendall, Kane, and Dekalb counties.

Severe weather has been battering states in the South and Midwest. Tornadoes leveled homes, and the system is being blamed for at least 31 deaths. Jason Allen reports for CBS News New York.
