The mother of slain Newark police detective Joseph Azcona tearfully recalled her lost son last night -- and talked of the heartbreak she felt after learning the tragic news.

Authorities identified Newark police detective Joseph Azcona as the officer who was allegedly shot and killed by a 14-year-old while on duty on Friday, March 7, during a press conference a day later.

The police dispatch on the radio Friday night was a staccato of static, terse orders, and alarm. An officer was down. A suspect was “out,” presumably on the ground, awaiting EMS. There was a search for another possible weapon.

Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey asked people to “please pray” for the officers, who were shot around 6:30 p.m. Friday.

One Newark police officer was fatally shot and another seriously injured in the city Friday night, according to the New Jersey State PBA.
